Passport/Visas Passports-remember if you are traveling outside the US or to one of its territories, you will need a passport. This does apply to both our neighbors to the north and south as well. Allow yourself plenty of time to get your paperwork in order, birth certificate, correct size and pose for photos, etc. and the actual processing of your passports. Always check to see if the country to which you are traveling also requires visas, or inoculations. Be sure and check several times prior to your actual departure date as laws do change periodically

Timing is Everything This is true in the travel industry as well….you may elect to travel “after” kids have gone back to school, or when the seasonal temperatures are more to your liking in different countries. Autumn can be a wonderful time to visit some countries, but remember that some countries have opposite seasons from the USA, so be sure you know ahead of time the “expected” weather for that time of year…not sure, just ask one our Zipto David’s Bridal travel experts. |

Check-List Services
Hold mail, stop newspaper delivery, advise credit card companies and debit cards of your travel plans as to where and when so that your accounts do not get put on Fraud Alert. This will prohibit your use of the cards while traveling.
Clothes Packing
list-number of days, number of nights where you may want to change into more formal clothing, etc. Pack for what you will be doing, if you are in a tropical setting, you’ll want lightweight tops and shorts, sandals. Don’t forget sunglasses. Tip-try and color coordinate as many of your outfits as possible, so you can mix and match to cut down on the number of shoes and purses you need to take. Shoes are one of the biggest culprits for traveling women when it comes to a suitcase being overweight at check-in. Remember swim suit, hat for sun, etc. Try and pack matching jewelry too…you want to leave room and space in your suitcase for souvenirs and the like coming home, so don’t over pack. Always have one light change of clothes in your carry-on, just to be on the safe-side. A small sewing kit does come in handy too. Pack a light poncho or small umbrella just in case. A light neutral color shawl is always good to take on the flight. It can be a bit nippy sometimes, they are always handy.
Medicine
Be sure you keep all your daily medicines in one spot and check if your prescription will run out just before or during your trip. If yes, be sure and get it filled prior to leaving. Take along some extra items you may not normally take on a daily basis, such as stomach settlers, aspirin and healing or anti-itch ointments. Remember sunscreen if going to a tropical location. If you wear contacts or glasses, be sure and bring an extra set if you have them, and a glass repair kit you can pick-up at the local convenience store. Soap-if your skin is sensitive-pack your regular soap to avoid nasty breakouts from products that are great, but not right for you. Check and make sure your hotel/resort has hairdryers/irons ahead of time. You don’t want to lug those around with you if you don’t have to-again, less weight, more shopping.
Addresses
Even with the best intentions, postcards are not always a reality when you are out and doing things all day, dining at night and getting up the next day and repeating the process, but do bring a list of addresses to which you would like to “attempt” to send postcards …and do yourself a favor and buy extras for yourself. If you are going to have a jam-packed trip, you may not remember the names of some of the things you took pictures of and postcards are an excellent source for that information. Don’t forget you must use the stamps of the country you are in and check to be sure you have enough postage to reach your desired location.
Phone Tips
Check with your cell phone provider and make sure your phone has been switched to international calling and receiving before you leave. Check if there are any additional costs for doing so. Also, leave your destination phone number, name of hotel/resort and your cell phone number with a relative or friend at home in case of emergencies. Many resorts offer internet access as well, either for free or a small fee.
Other Items to take along
Camera and extra batteries, film/disc. Travel size games like Scrabble and Trivia, or cards are great on longer trips. A good book, or two, if you are a fast reader…or just bring along some magazines you have been dying to read but haven’t had the time with all the wedding planning. Baby wipes and sanitary hand lotion are very popular items, but don’t buy in bulk-just enough to get you there and back. Notepad and pen. The pen will always come in handy for customs forms, etc. and the notepad…you may just want to jot a few things down here and there.
Your Documents
Be sure and keep your reservation information, flight info or tickets and all details you have related to your trip with your carry-on or personal item. Most every package includes transportation to and from the airport to the resorts, but do be sure you know what company to look for and don’t be fooled by taxi drivers who are not holding a sign with your name. Yes, you will still get to your destination, but it will be an added expense, so be sure you know who your ground transportation is. Keep your passport and any other needed documentations together.

Currency While many countries do accept USD, that is not universal. Most countries do accept credit cards, but it is always a good idea to know before you go and if you are exchanging currency, the airport is usually the most cost effective way to do that. There will be a slight service fee for getting or turning currency back in, but it still proves to be the most economic source. Your debit or credit card will also work in ATM machines in most countries, again, there will be a fee and you will receive the money of the country you are in at that time, not USD. Most ATM machines also have English instructions or at least universal icons, but try and stick with those associated with banks if at all possible. The front desk of most hotels and resorts can also assist you with this, again for a slight fee. |

Luggage Be sure and check if there are any extra luggage fees. Some airlines have none, others only charge for the second bag, while still others do charge for the first bag also. Most of the time these charges are payable at the counter, so do take extra cash. If you are going to be doing any inter-island flying in smaller aircraft after your arrival, also check on those regulations as they may be different from your main carrier. Good examples of these would be Hawaii, Tahiti, South America, etc.
Carry-on items Most airlines allow one personal item such as a purse, and one carry on piece of overnight luggage that should not exceed 21”. Again, it is always a good idea to check and recheck before departure as rules change from time to time. Check with your airline as to the most updated rules for liquids, sprays, nail polish and gels or food for carry-ons. |

Language
One of the most delightful things to do when traveling is to visit a country whose first language is “not” English. It is always a good idea to pick up a cd or book to learn some key words to try out while visiting another country. Almost without fail, all hotels and resorts do have English speaking staff, but you may want to explore the surrounding area and a little knowledge of their language is sometimes helpful, especially things like please, thank you, hello, goodbye. You will find that many natives will go out of their way to help you when you have made the effort to speak their language. It is also great to read up on the country/countries you are going to visit before going. It helps put things in perspective and locals appreciate that you know something about “their” country. |

Time Zone In addition to checking weather, be sure you know if you are flying into a different time zone so you are conscious of this, especially when returning home and having someone pick you up at the airport. Also remember standard time to show up at the airport is an hour for domestic flights, and no less than 2 hours for international flights. This too should be checked and double-checked prior to departure and it is always prudent to check to see that your flight is on time before you leave your home to head to the airport. |

Book Tours If you already know there are certain things you want to do, then be sure and book ahead. This will guarantee that when you arrive, you do not have to deal with trying to get into a tour which may be sold out. This can be a great disappointment and setting up tours ahead of time means you are going to be taken care of by professionals who have been approved and are reliable. All you have to do is show up at the designated day and time, and enjoy. |

Bottled Water A word to the wise. Please realize that it isn’t that the water is “bad” in other places in the world, it is more that each country has their own standards and filtration systems, which “your” system most likely will not automatically adapt to it. The last thing you want is “stomach” problems, so when drinking water, stick to bottled. In Europe you may be asked if you want “flat or gas”…that pretty much means exactly what it sounds like, flat is regular still water, whereas gas would be effervescent, such as mineral carbonated water. |
